Screening Notes
There is NO ONE that captures the emotion and depth of a single character-driven story like Tom Hanks…Splash, Big, Sleepless in Seattle, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, Captain Phillips, Sully, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood…and now, A Man Called Otto. Good actors become their character and Hanks becomes Otto. The film is tearful, funny, tender-hearted and broken-hearted. But best of all, Otto is a feel-good film.
Boxoffice Estimate
With Hanks anchoring the film, Otto will obviously appeal to an “older” demographic, facing the challenge of capturing the crossover younger and family demos. Hopefully the book’s 42-week listing on the NYT Best Seller list back in 2013, and the resulting 3 million copies sold, will help grab hold of moviegoer attention. I think it a missed opportunity to not have opened “wide” on Christmas Day, rather than limited on Dec 30…with an eye on possibly expanding Jan 13; this would have made a wonderful holiday title.
Hanks is a force unto himself, so his recent filmography serves as the best comp title set; minus the Toy Story franchise, his recent films have averaged an $18.5M opening weekend, driving a 4x multiple, for a total of $74.1M. My thinking is Otto tracks closer to Sully and Captain Phillips (but with much more humor), which leads to an opening weekend [WB 1/13] projection totaling $25.5M, with a range between $23M and $28M. The anticipated 3.9x multiple is in line with other Hanks’ titles, but slightly higher than similar PG13 Jan openings since 2016, yielding a total gross estimate between $90M and $110M. If not for Elvis, then let’s see if Otto nabs Hanks an Oscar nomination…
