Drama/Comedy. Set in the '30s, movie follows three friends who witness a murder, become suspects themselves, and uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history; based on a true incident. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Taylor Swift, Robert DeNiro, Chris Rock, Rami Malek

Screening Notes

Even not knowing who the director is, savvy moviegoers will quickly see David O. Russell’s fingerprints all over this movie, think American Hustle…Silver Linings Playbook…The Fighter…I Heart Huckabees…Three Kings. The movie is quirky fun (similar to Wes Anderson movies, but without the weirdness), blurring the lines nicely between historical fact and fiction. The casting is fantastic, with spot-on character development that is well executed…Taylor Swift, who knew!

Boxoffice Estimate

Tracking “awareness” for the film looks to be solid, with “positive interest” high across all age demos; not surprising, given the cast ranges from Taylor Swift to Robert DeNiro. Russell’s past four films have averaged a $15.8M opening, but also opened on an average of 2,600 screens…Amsterdam is expected to open pretty limited, on only 1,800 screens, which will undoubtedly make the average screen metric look great but will suppress the total $$$.

With the screen count limited, my math projects an opening weekend totaling $8.1M, with a range between $7M and $9M, just 54% versus the other Russell films. The good news is, like other Russell titles, this film should hang around for quite a few strong weeks, yielding a very healthy 7.0x multiple for a total gross between $50M and $62M.
