Screening Notes
Disney’s Pixar titles always bring out the emotions…come on, who didn’t tear up watching Toy Story 3. While not overall as heartwarming as Toy Story, Elemental’s characters are surprisingly pretty fun, and of course, the animation is excellent…duh, this is Pixar we’re talking about after all. Strange World and Lightyear were well done titles too but just didn’t resonate with audiences like we all hoped…as a result, I was holding my breath going into Elemental but now happy to report I left the screening with a heck of a lot less anxiety. It was a nice touch adding the Carl’s Date short (10 min) to the front of the film…always fun to see Carl and his talking dog, Dug, from the movie Up. Kids and parents will both enjoy this film and the 102-minute run time if very family-friendly!
Boxoffice Estimate
Disney’s last 5 animated films opened to an average of $22M and rolled on to total $62M (take out Lightyear and those numbers drop to $15M and $47M)...$22M is 68% short of the $70M | $260M average for their top 30 films over the past 20 years.
Elemental looks well-positioned to blow past the recent Disney animated average by 45%, opening to $32M, with a range between $29M and $35M. With the only other near term animated title on the slate not opening until the end of Jun, and after than not another one until Aug, the projected 3.4x multiple (which is 20% greater than the recent Disney average) could end up being a little low. The film’s final gross is estimated between $99M and $121M.
