Exhibitor Notes & Boxoffice Estimate - ELVIS (PG13)

Published Jun 2, 2022

Synopsis

Distributor: Warner Bros. | Release Date: 6/24/22 | Run Time: 159 Minutes

The film chronicles the life and career of singer and actor Elvis Presley, from his early days as a child to becoming a rock and roll star and movie star, as well as his complex relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker.

Screening Notes

As exciting as it has been to watch the opening weekend grosses for Top Gun: Maverick, Dr. Strange, The Batman and Spider-Man roll-in, the truth is, the industry cannot recover, grow, or even survive simply bouncing from blockbuster to blockbuster. In other words, since it’s baseball season…we can’t win the game, if our strategy is to swing for the fences every time we step up to the plate. To enjoy a winning season, we need to play “small ball” too…stealing bases, bunts, singles, doubles and anything else to score runs.

Elvis is not a blockbuster, it’s a solid double, which we desperately need a lot more of right now.

Elvis is perfectly played by Austin Butler and, of course, Tom Hanks (aka, Col. Parker) can effortlessly play any character. Even with a hefty 159-minute run time, the editing and pace of this film is spot-on; the music…well, it’s Elvis…the all-time best-selling individual artist in the history of music. The movie is visually mesmerizing but will also remind fans how unnecessarily tragic Elvis’ life was.

Elvis should receive Academy Award nods for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. It’s worth noting that a whopping +90% of best picture winners have been dramas, and nothing pulls at the heartstrings of the Academy nominators more than a heartbreaking filmed version of true events!

Boxoffice Estimate

Elvis will most definitely appeal to Baby Boomers and their parents…to them, he will always be The King! While Gen X, Millennials, and the iGeneration know of Elvis, I’m not sure they pay too much attention to him, which will hold down gross.

Recent comparative titles are a mixed bag…Respect and Judy were modest films, both grossing $24M; Rocketman, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born enjoyed a $100M to $200M boxoffice.

Adding all this up, my modeling lands at an opening weekend totaling $37M, with a range between $33M and $41M. I’ve applied a 2.5x multiple, which leads to a total gross between $130M and $160M. A perfect two-base hit!
