Exhibitor Notes & Boxoffice Estimate - Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore (PG13)

Published Mar. 30, 2022

Synopsis

Distributor: Warner Bros. | Release Date: 4/15/22 | Run Time: 143 Minutes

In this third film of the series, Professor Albus Dumbledore knows the powerful, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts magizoologist Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team of wizards and witches. They soon encounter an array of old and new beasts as they clash with Grindelwald's growing legion of followers.

Screening Notes

The first Harry Potter film hit screens 20 years ago. With each release, the storylines became grittier, more sinister and the intensity-level ratcheted-up…and as Deathly Hallows II hit screens in 2011, the core audience had aged 10 years and was ready; the film opened to $169M and went on to gross $382M domestically and $1.3B worldwide.

In 2016, Fantastic Beasts launched, continuing the HP relationship with an ever dedicated, and now older, fan base. The first two Fantastic Beasts films, and now Secrets of Dumbledore, wonderfully capture the visual depth and magical cinematography of the Harry Potter world. Secrets of Dumbledore has some surprisingly violent and intense scenes…the creatures Newt battles when rescuing his brother, Theseus, from prison are terrifyingly disturbing!

However, overall, as much as I want to enjoy the Fantastic Beast films, I continue to find the characters too simple and two-dimensional, and the franchise always seems to come up short on good, engaging storytelling…yes, there are kids that will want to see this film, but the screenwriters also need to remember that those initial 10-year-old Harry Potter fans are now 30-years old.

Boxoffice Estimate

With eight (8) films, averaging a $100M opening weekend, going on to generate a combined $2.4B in domestic boxoffice and $7.7B worldwide, you CANNOT underestimate the loyalty of the Harry Potter fanbase. While not in the same league as HP, the first two Fantastic Beasts films averaged a $68M opening and a $197M total.

With an expected 4,000+ runs, my math lands at an opening weekend totaling $53M, with a range between $48M and $59M, and a total gross between $116M and $142M.
