Screening Notes
Ghostbusters fans will be happy to know that Frozen Empire hits the ball down the middle of the fairway…a safe, comfortable, and desirable place to be, staying true to the original film’s legacy. Speaking of the original film, having brought the old gang back together at the very end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it’s fun to see Ray, Winston, Peter, and Melnitz make such strong appearance in this film. The always reliable Paul Rudd nicely anchors the new team of fresh-faced Ghostbusters.
Boxoffice Estimate
The industry needs a quick boost in gross right now, so, with moviegoer “awareness” of the franchise and “positive interest” both running in the mid-80s, “who ya gonna call…”
This comedy looks to have a wide-open lane until May, when Fall Guy (5/4) and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (5/10) enter the slate. Hopefully, this means an opening weekend estimate of $41M, with a range between $37M and $45M, going on to yield a 3.2x multiple, producing a final gross between $116M and $142M...of course, more is always better. To add a little context to just how big the original Ghostbusters movie was, it only opened on 1,300 screens in 1984 (growing to a whopping 1,500 at its widest), generating an opening weekend gross of $13M. The film went on to yield an incredible 16.7x multiple, translating into a total gross of $227M…in today’s dollars, that’s $39M going on to total $678M.
