Screening Notes

Just as with the first film, Inside Out 2 does a super job of taking moviegoers on an emotional journey inside the mind of a now 13-year-old Riley, where they discover getting older can sometimes be hilariously messy, awkward, and embarrassing.  The movie’s simple message about the importance of embracing all emotions will resonate with kids and adults, making the 96 minutes both fun and meaningful.

Pixar films always deliver a wonderful combination of cutting-edge animation and heartfelt, compelling stories (i.e. Toy Story)…not that the other major animation styles aren’t fun too:  Disney films have stunning hand-drawn animation, timeless stories, and catchy musical scores (i.e. Frozen), while Dreamworks brings humor, irreverent plots and quirky characters (i.e. Shrek).

Boxoffice Estimate

Elemental (’23) and Lightyear (’22) were a little slow out of the gate, so it will be nice to have Disney’s summer entry firmly back on track...the original Inside Out turned in the 4th highest opening for a Disney summer film in the last 10 years.  At t-minus ten (10) days out, National Research Group (NRG) tracking is yielding an 86 Awareness and 16 First Choice scores.  Looking over a data set of more than 150 titles at this same point in time, historically the combination of these scores translates into an opening weekend gross somewhere around ~$75M…

A weighted analysis of a comparative title set, points to expectations of a $72M opening, with a range between $65M and $79M, going on to yield a 3.5x multiple, which should produce a final gross between $226M and $276M

This is 20% less than the opening of Inside Out ($90M) in ‘15 but…would rank as the 3rd highest opening animated title in the last 14-months, behind Mario Bros ($146M) and Spider-Verse ($120M), 25% greater than Kung Fu Panda 4 ($58M), and 15% greater than the average PG-rated title ($62M) opening in June over the last 8 years.
