Synopsis
Distributed by: Universal | Release Date: Jun 10, 2022 | Run Time: 147 Minutes
Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard…two generations of the Jurassic franchise unite for the first time in an epic conclusion. Four years after Isla Nublar has been destroyed, dinosaurs now live--and hunt--alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history's most fearsome creatures.
Screening Notes
Jurassic World: Dominion is THE epitome of summer blockbuster movies. Steven Spielberg, make-believe, science fiction, suspenseful storytelling, courageous heroes and menacing dinosaurs…what is it about the timeless popularity of dinosaurs?!
Similar to Spiderman: No Way Home and Top Gun: Maverick, fans of the series will enjoy the nostalgia of seeing the original Jurassic heroes (Drs. Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, Ian Malcom) reunited after 30 years and back in action…and in more than just simple cameo roles. As with past Jurassic movies…and anytime dinosaurs are involved…this film will scare the bejesus out of smaller kids
The only negative is the 147-minute run time…10 to 15 minutes could/should have been shaved off. Having said that, I suspect the length was left to ensure the legacy characters were given a respectful amount of screen time.
Boxoffice Estimate
My modeling included a weighted mix of the original Jurassic Park series (older, nostalgic fans), the Jurassic World series (today’s fan base) and the epic Kong and Godzilla films (monster fans) over the last several years. Also, given the boxoffice strength of the last several family titles, plus Downton’s (and what should be Top Gun’s) success in rallying older moviegoers to return to theatres, I did NOT include any COVID-related discounting. Further, in a surprising twist, I actually sense the lack of content (LTM, we are running 28% behind 2019 on the number of wide-release titles) will give this film a little added boost, fueled by content-deprived moviegoers.
Adding all this up, my modeling lands at an opening weekend totaling $189M, with a range between $170M and $208M, making Jurassic World the #1 title of the summer…and likely 2022. As we all painful know, the industry has not yet returned to 2019 moviegoing levels, so I’ve applied a conservative 2.8x multiple (the second lowest of the six (6) previous Jurassic titles), which leads to a total gross between $476 and $581M.
By the way, the original 1993 Jurassic Park opening weekend total of $50M equals $100M in today’s dollars…and driven by only 2,400 screens!
