Screening Notes

Of course, it’s pretty hard to beat the original Planet of the Apes franchise…how can you compete with Charlton Heston yelling, ”take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!”  However, setting aside the Mark Walhberg Planet of the Apes reboot mess in ’01, the last 3 titles have actually been well received by audiences, averaging an 83 Audience Score, and Kingdom fits in nicely with this group.  The special effects are excellent, the young ape hero of the film, Noa, is likeable and relatable, and the storyline has just enough edge and complexity to be a thought-provoking complement to the on-screen action.  Franchise fans will not be disappointed, and the film should appeal to all audiences that enjoy dystopian films…hopefully this is the next event film for all those faithful Dune 2, Hunger Games moviegoers.

Boxoffice Estimate

T-minus ten (10) days out and National Research Group (NRG) tacking is yielding a promising 92 Awareness and 23 First Choice score.  Looking over a data set of more than 100 titles at this same point in time, historically the combination of these scores translates into an opening weekend gross somewhere between $41M and $63M…which just happens to line up with my thinking based on a weighted comparative film analysis.

Expectations point to a $58M opening, with a range between $53M and $64M, going on to yield a 2.5x multiple, which should produce a final gross between $133M and $162M.  The $58M closely aligns with War of the Planet Apes (’17), is about 10% greater than the average PG13 title opening in May over the last 8 years, and roughly 15% less than the comparative title set…which includes a pretty impressive list of titles.

Looking forward to this film hitting screens...!
