Synopsis
Comedy. When 30-year-old self-proclaimed homebody reluctantly joins a Palm Springs bachelorette trip for her best friend, her inner 70-year-old is released — literally. The frustrated writer and influencer magically transforms into her future self: “Aunt Rita”. Freed from the constraints of other people’s expectations, Rita comes into her own, becoming an unlikely social media sensation and sparking a tentative romance. Screening Notes
Diane Keaton has skillfully played this type of comedy role for decades…Baby Boom to Father of the Bride to First Wives Club to Something’s Gotta Give to Book Club. Mack & Rita is a simple, feel-good comedy that does a respectable job of appealing (and having relevance) to both Gen Z and aging Baby Boomers. The PG13 rating keeps the content family-friendly, and the messaging is uplifting. The film will play well in small town markets.
Boxoffice Estimate
The number of YTD releases are down 37% versus 2019, and Aug and Sep “wide” releases currently on the slate look to be down by over 20%. We need content and Mack & Rita enters the calendar as one of only three non-animated, family-friendly comedies this summer (Family Camp and Easter Sunday being the other two)…with the next title (Ticket to Paradise) not showing up on the schedule until WB 10/21. There is a moviegoer appetite for both more content and PG13 non-animated comedies.
The 7 comp titles rounded-up (which includes 4 Diane Keaton titles) have averaged a $5.7M opening. Looking back over the past 5-years-worth of PG13-rated comedies, opening in Aug, have averaged a $11.8M opening…however, if you exclude Free Guy (’21) and Crazy Rich Asians (’19), the average is $5.5M and more in line with our projections. Modeling for Mack & Rita lands at an opening weekend totaling $4.2M, with a range between $3.8M and $4.6M. The film should hold on with a 3.4x multiple, yielding a total gross between $13M and $16M. A solid single base hit.
