Exhibitor Notes & Boxoffice Estimate - THE LOST CITY (PG13)

Published Mar. 8, 2022

Synopsis

Distributor: Paramount | Release Date: 3/25/22 | Run Time: 92 Minutes

A reclusive romance novelist on a book tour with her cover model gets swept up in kidnapping attempt that lands them both in a cutthroat jungle adventure.

Screening Notes

This is super-simple (but well-needed) sit back, relax, don’t-have-to-think, rom-com/adventure entertainment. Audiences will enjoy seeing Sandra Bullock finally back on screen (think Miss Congeniality and Heat) and paired with Channing Tatum (on a roll with Dog and now Lost City), who has turned into a surprisingly funny and reliable actor…most of all, moviegoers will really enjoy the surprise appearance of Brad Pitt, his cameo is short-lived but so much fun. I look for film grosses to over-index in small market theatres.

Oh, and the PG13 rating and 92-minute run time are spot-on moviegoer (AND operations) friendly…thank you Paramount!

Boxoffice Estimate

Tatum’s last seven (7) titles have averaged a $27.5M opening, while comparative Bullock titles have averaged $45.5M; the four (4) other comps considered have averaged $38.5M. My math lands at an opening weekend totaling $28.9M, with a range between $26.0M and $31.8M. While Lost City has WB 3/25 all to themselves, there are seven (7) new titles opening over the following three weekends (including, Morbius, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Fantastic Beasts), so I’m discounting the total gross multiple a bit (versus comps) and projecting an $82M to $100M total gross.
