Screening Notes
Through now four (4) films, over 11 years, Thor’s latest adventure doesn’t miss a beat and continues to be hilariously entertaining. Although the story begins on a pretty teary-eyed and grim note, overall, Thor is a perfect summer “popcorn movie” that doesn’t take itself too seriously and is simply enjoyable entertainment. Chris Hemsworth is effortlessly funny, and audiences will love the many cameos, including the crew from Guardians of the Galaxy. After the “darkness” run of Venom 2, Morbius and Dr. Strange, it’s refreshing to have the Marvel Universe return to some lighthearted fun.
Boxoffice Estimate
Marvel Universe fans rank Thor third in popularity, behind Iron Man and Captain American…but, importantly, female fans rank him #1. It’s also noteworthy that Thor 2’s opening weekend outgrossed Thor 1 by 30% and 4-years later, Thor 3 then crushed Thor 2’s opening by 43%, opening to $123M.
My modeling lands at an opening weekend totaling $161M (30% greater than Thor 3), with a range between $145M and $177M…if on target, this would place Thor: Love and Thunder within the Top 10 of the Marvel Universe’s 32 opening weekends, snuggled in between Captain Marvel ($153M) and Iron Man 3 ($174M). The total multiple should hold at a solid 2.6x, leading to a total gross between $375M and $458M.
