Exhibitor Notes & Boxoffice Estimate: THE OUTFIT (R)

Published Jan. 26, 2022

Synopsis

Distributor: Focus Features | Release Date: 3/18/22 | Run time: 105 Minutes

The film follows Leonard, an English tailor who used to craft suits on London’s world-famous Savile Row. But after a personal tragedy, he’s ended up in 1958 Chicago, operating a small tailor shop in a rough part of town where he makes beautiful clothes for the only people around who can afford them: a family of vicious gangsters. Now he must outwit a dangerous group of mobsters to survive a fateful night.

Screening Notes

On the surface, this film would seem to be a bit of a “snoozer”…the central character is a soft-spoken, aging, master English tailor, played by a 62-year-old English actor (Mark Rylance) primarily known for his Shakespearean stage work; only four characters appear in ~100 of the total 105-minute run time; the entire movie takes place in a very small two-room tailor shop over the course of one wintery night in 1958 Chicago.

The movie is a lot like watching a wonderful stage play and Rylance does command the stage. This thriller includes several clever twists and even a surprise to the surprise ending.

Boxoffice Estimate

I do like that Focus has taken advantage of Downton Abbey moving to May and quickly pushed their release date from Feb 25 to the newly open Mar 18 date. Absent the COVID-factor, I would project this film to open to $1.5M and go on to gross $7.3M. This film will skew to a slightly older “art-house” demographic, so will have to include a bit of a COVID-discount in the boxoffice estimate, along with the fact, as is Focus’ practice, it will likely only open on several hundred screens.

Taking both these factors into consideration (along with my super-secret, highly complex econometrics regression analysis), I estimate a $.9M opening and a $3.7M total gross.
